Enjoy Beautiful Cherry Blossom Japan on Winter Season

The Kawazu Cherry Blossom Fest (Kawazuzakura Matsuri) happens every year from early Feb to early Mar in Kawazu on the Izu Peninsula.

Cherry Blossom Along Kawazu River

This popular event celebrates the blooming Kawazu Cherry Trees, drawing nearly two million visitors for one of the first chances to see loads of cherry blossoms near Tokyo.

These Kawazu Cherry Trees bloom early, starting around early Feb, but they take their time compared to other cherry varieties. So, you’ve got about a month to enjoy their beauty. The best time viewing is usually for two weeks in late Feb and early Mar, but it can change depending on the weather.

Discovered in Kawazu in the ’50s, these cherry trees were planted across the city, mostly along the Kawazu River. There’s even an original Kawazuzakura tree in a residential area that started it all.

Kawazu Sakura

The festival goes down along the Kawazu River, where you’ll find rows of Kawazu Cherry Trees stretching for about four kilometers. The town center trees start the cherry blossom show, and it gradually moves upriver towards the Kawazu Seven Waterfalls.

And there are tons of festival stalls along the riverbank selling all kinds of goodies like cooked food, snacks, local fruits, souvenirs, and even little Kawazuzakura trees you can take home. Yellow rape blossoms join the party, opening around the same time. Don’t miss the night illuminations from 18:00 to 21:00—they’re a real treat! 🌸
