Japan is famous for its cherry blossom in spring and autumn leaves in fall. It makes many people confused when to come to Japan.
There is a special cherry blossom tree that bloom twice a year. It is called “Shikizakura”, the four-season sakura. It blooms in spring, and in fall when the autumn leaves are at their best.
History of Shikizakura
Shikizakura trees originated in the early 1800s. There was a samurai physician, Fujimoto Genseki presented with one of the rare trees from a temple in Nagoya. This special tree is now designated as a Natural Monument, planted in Obara. Shikizakura grew very well across the district.
Where can you find these special trees?
Shikizakura tree is spreaded around Obara, near Nagoya. It takes around 30 minutes from Nagoya to Obara by car. If you visit Obara in fall season, you can enjoy the best of cherry blossom and the autumn leaves.
There are many places in Obara with Shikizakura trees well grown, such as:
- Obara Fureai Park;
- Obara Washi no Furusato;
- Senmi Shikizakura no Sato;
- Northern Life Improvement Center.
Over 10 thousand trees grace the Obara region, and are usually at their best from early to late November. You can see both red and orange autumn leaves, and also the pink cherry blossom at the same time.
Obara Shikizakura Festival
There are also Shikizakura Festival held by locals every November, at Obara Fureai Park. As Aichi Prefecture’s prime destination for people viewing the flowering blossom trees and autumn foliage.
You can experience the breathtaking view of 300 Shikizakura trees along its walking paths. During the festival, there will be taiko drum performances, haiku competitions, food stalls, and other events throughout the park.
