Nagoya, Japan — Heavy rainfall hit central Japan on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, causing severe flooding across parts of Nagoya and surrounding areas. Roads, railway lines, and other infrastructure were flooded, disrupting daily activities and public transportation.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued its highest-level Level 5 flood warning for the Shonai River, which runs through Gifu and Aichi prefectures. Authorities urged residents in several areas to immediately move to a safe location due to the risk of flooding.
Record Rainfall in Nagoya
Nagoya experienced exceptionally heavy rainfall on Tuesday. The city recorded approximately 104 millimeters of rain in one hour, causing water levels to rise rapidly and flooding in several areas.
The heavy rain was caused by an active seasonal weather front affecting central Japan. Residents in parts of Chikusa, Moriyama, and Meito were among those urged to take immediate safety precautions.
According to the Aichi Prefectural Government, four people sustained minor injuries, while approximately 2,700 people evacuated to shelters.
Train Services Were Disrupted
The heavy rainfall also caused major disruptions to transportation in Nagoya.
Nagoya’s subway services were temporarily suspended, affecting thousands of passengers. Parts of the JR Chuo Line were flooded, while several roads in busy areas such as Sakae were covered with water.
Shinkansen services were also affected. JR Central temporarily suspended Tokaido Shinkansen services between Tokyo and Okayama, while some Sanyo Shinkansen services were also suspended due to the heavy rain.
Authorities Continue to Urge Caution
Although the situation has gradually improved, JMA warned that heavy rain could continue in parts of Japan through Thursday, September 10.
Residents and travelers are advised to remain alert to the risk of flooding, landslides, and rising river levels, especially in areas that have already experienced heavy rainfall.
