Japan is entering a rare five-day holiday this September. Silver Week 2026 runs from Saturday, September 19 to Wednesday, September 23, bringing a longer-than-usual break for residents across the country.
For visitors in Tokyo, this means busier trains, crowded attractions, and more people traveling around Japan. At the same time, most shops, restaurants, and major sightseeing spots remain open, while the city fills up with seasonal events, exhibitions, and festivals.
Here’s what to know before traveling during Silver Week.

Why Is Silver Week Five Days in 2026?
Silver Week happens when several national holidays line up to create an extended holiday period.
In 2026, Respect for the Aged Day falls on Monday, September 21, while the Autumnal Equinox falls on Wednesday, September 23. Because September 22 falls between two public holidays, it becomes a citizens’ holiday under Japan’s holiday law.
Together, these holidays create a five day break from September 19 to 23.
This alignment does not happen often. The last time Japan had a five-day Silver Week was in 2015.
For travelers staying longer, taking September 24 and 25 off would extend the break into a nine-day holiday through Sunday, September 27.
What Will Be Open During Silver Week?
For visitors, Silver Week does not mean Japan shuts down.
Convenience stores, restaurants, department stores, shopping areas, and major tourist attractions generally remain open throughout the holiday. However, popular places are likely to be busier than usual.
Banks, post offices, and government offices are the main exceptions. They close during the public holidays, so visitors who need banking or postal services should plan ahead. ATMs, including those at convenience stores, generally remain available.
Museums can have different holiday schedules, so it is always worth checking the official website before visiting.
Expect Busier Trains and Shinkansen
Tokyo’s public transportation continues operating during Silver Week, although some private railways and buses use weekend or holiday timetables on public holidays.
The biggest crowds are expected on long-distance routes.
Shinkansen trains leaving Tokyo on September 19 and returning on September 22 and 23 are likely to be especially busy. Reserved Shinkansen seats go on sale one month in advance, so booking early is recommended if you have fixed travel dates.
There is also a special arrangement for the period. From September 18 to 23, Nozomi trains operate with reserved seats only, meaning there are no non reserved cars.
If you are traveling between Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, or Hiroshima during this period, planning your train journey ahead can make the trip much easier.
What Can You Do in Tokyo?
Silver Week falls during a busy autumn event season in Tokyo, with plenty happening across the city.
Tokyo Night and Light and Hatsune Miku Lights Tokyo offer evening experiences during the holiday period, while the ODAIBA DRONE SHOW 2026 brings a free drone show over Tokyo Bay on September 19–22.
Other events include Tokyo German Village Fireworks on September 19, Moon Art Night Shimokitazawa from September 18, and the Ikebukuro Flea Market on September 23.
If you want to escape the city for a day, the Red Spider Lily Festival at Kinchakuda in Saitama runs from September 21 to October 6, making it a seasonal day-trip option around the autumn equinox.
Planning to Travel During Silver Week?
Silver Week can be a busy time to visit Japan, but most of Tokyo remains fully open and there is plenty to see and do.
The key is planning ahead, especially for hotels, Shinkansen tickets, popular attractions, and restaurants. If you have flexibility, traveling outside the busiest dates can also help you avoid some of the holiday crowds.
Whether you are staying in Tokyo or exploring beyond the city, Silver Week is a great opportunity to experience Japan during the beginning of the autumn season.
